Unsealed Letter Reveals DOJ Ire With UnitedHealth, Change

By Bryan Koenig (May 6, 2022, 7:04 PM EDT) — UnitedHealth Group’s Optum unit and health care technology outfit Change Healthcare stymied U.S. Department of Justice investigators at every turn in the run-up to the DOJ challenge of their $13.8 billion merger, according to a letter unsealed Thursday in D.C. federal court.

The letter that DOJ Antitrust Division healthcare and consumer products section chief Eric D. Welsh sent the companies’ counsel Feb. 23, one day before the challenge was filed, offers unvarnished insight into the department’s bid to delay the trial, now set for Aug. 1.
