Under PIPL, demand for DPOs rises, while salaries and risks ‘soar’

The Financial Times reports China’s Personal Information Protection Law has increased demand for data protection officers. Xiang Li, who manages training courses for DPOs, said companies are looking for professionals with technology skills and government relations experience, as well as an understanding of China’s data laws. While salaries “have soared,� Li said the “strain on DPOs is immense,� as they could be held personally liable for any violations of China’s laws. DLA Piper Partner Carolyn Bigg said “ambiguity in the PIPL� compounds the strain on DPOs.
