Travel website hack never reported due to no ‘negative effects’

ArsTechnica reports a data breach into Booking.com in 2016 was never reported because “actual adverse negative effects on the private lives of individuals” could not be found, according to a Booking.com representative quoted in a new book about the incident. Booking.com, based out of Amsterdam, and private U.S. investigators determined a U.S.-based hacker working for an intelligence agency hacked into the travel company’s system and stole data regarding travel plans in the Middle East, including full names, hotel reservations, room PINs and travel plans.
