Shifty Ransomware Crews Spark Sanctions Concerns

By Ben Kochman (June 16, 2022, 9:50 PM EDT) — A recent trend of cybercriminals attempting to mislead targets about their identities has made matters more difficult for attack victims tasked with deciding quickly whether a ransomware payout might breach government sanctions, industry attorneys say.

With ransomware in the spotlight after attacks in 2021 on a major U.S. gas and fuel pipeline and one of the world’s largest meat processing companies, some cybercrime groups have responded by keeping a lower profile, changing their names and in some cases using different hacking tools, industry experts say.
