FCC Commissioner Floats Wireless Software Security Updates

By Christopher Cole (June 30, 2022, 8:36 PM EDT) — The Federal Communications Commission needs to encourage more software updates that will boost security of wireless devices as threats to private data continue unabated, an FCC member said.

Commissioner Nathan Simington said Tuesday that although the FCC’s legal authority to require device updates remains limited, agency policies can nudge manufacturers in that direction. The problem, he told a gathering of the Rural Wireless Association, is that updates on devices such as smartphones are wildly inconsistent.
