FCC Aims To Beef Up Reliability Of Wireless Emergency Alerts

By Christopher Cole (April 21, 2022, 6:14 PM EDT) — Stakeholders can share their views on how to improve wireless emergency alerts after the Federal Communications Commission launched an effort Thursday to identify the best ways to measure and report on the system’s performance.

The FCC voted 4-0 to open a rulemaking to make the alerts more effective and so that more mobile providers and emergency agencies make use of the capability. The system has been established for roughly a decade, and while the FCC described it as a “success story,” the commission said improvements are still needed.
