By Bonnie Eslinger (August 3, 2022, 6:53 PM EDT) — The public defender for an ex-Twitter employee accused of spying for Saudi Arabia urged a California federal judge at the close of evidence Wednesday to dismiss the case, saying it was “murky at best” whether the Saudi individual the defendant was in contact with was a foreign official.
The lawyer for Ahmad Abouammo – who is charged with secretly acting as an agent of a foreign government, committing wire fraud, money laundering and falsifying records – made the motion after the defense rested its case and prosecutors told the court they would not be calling any rebuttal witnesses.
