Dems Unveil Bill Banning Surveillance Advertising

By James Arkin (January 18, 2022, 6:33 PM EST) — Democratic lawmakers released a new bill Tuesday to ban the use of personal data for targeted advertising, seeking to create multiple enforcement mechanisms to end the use of “surveillance advertising” online.

The new legislation would prohibit advertisers from using personal data to target ads to individuals, and ban the targeting of ads based on information that identifies individuals’ protected class such as gender, race or sexual orientation. The new legislation, the Banning Surveillance Advertising Act, was introduced by Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J. and Reps. Anna Eshoo, D-Calif., and Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill.
