Apple announces Lockdown Mode against spyware

Apple has come up with a new tool in the fight against intrusive hackers, commercial companies and governments: Lockdown Mode. It is a security measure to counter targeted cyber attacks. This feature will be available this fall for devices running iOS 16, iPadOS 16, or macOS Ventura.

The iPhone maker announces Lockdown Mode – also called Isolation Mode – in a press release.

Pegasus responsible for wiretapping scandals in Europe

Spyware has been in the news a lot lately, especially Pegasus. This software, developed by Israel’s NSO Group, has reportedly been used recently to eavesdrop on dozens of Catalan and Spanish politicians. President Pedro Sánchez and Defense Minister Margarita Robles, among others, are said to have been spied on with this software. The matter cost Spanish intelligence chief Paz Esteban her job.

Pegasus is also said to have been used to listen in on hundreds of journalists and leading European politicians such as French President Emmanuel Macron and King of Morocco Mohammed VI. Several British politicians are also said to have been tapped with the spy software.

European Parliament to investigate Pegasus

To get to the bottom of the matter, the European Parliament appointed a commission of inquiry in March. The committee’s task is to find out to what extent Pegasus is being used to spy on prominent figures in Europe.
