Amid BigLaw Data Attacks, Breaches Surge For Smaller Firms

By Xiumei Dong (June 15, 2022, 11:35 AM EDT) — In mid-January, a cyberattack targeting New York law firm Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP exposed the firm’s email servers to unauthorized actors, potentially breaching the personal information of about 40 of the city’s residents, it told New York officials.

The white-shoe law firm informed New York’s state authorities in February, saying that a highly “sophisticated intruder” had accessed the firm’s network and extracted messages from some users’ email accounts, which had contained personal information that included Social Security numbers, identification documents and even financial and health information.
