AmFam, Baker Donelson Must Face $13B Surveillance Suit

By Rosie Manins (April 19, 2022, 6:57 PM EDT) — American Family Insurance Co., Baker Donelson Bearman Caldwell & Berkowitz PC and others must face all but one negligence claim in a woman’s $13 billion suit alleging they conspired to illegally spy on her, a Georgia state court judge has ruled.

In an order filed Monday, DeKalb County State Court Judge Kimberly K. Anderson predominantly denied various dismissal and summary judgment motions seeking to end the July 2021 case brought by Luisa Cruz Mezquital.

The judge dismissed Cruz’s negligence claim, based on an alleged violation of criminal trespass and eavesdropping statutes, but allowed all her other claims to proceed. The judge…
